Average Direct Cost per Year

Generally the amount is specified in the grant award notice. If not, calculate the average direct cost per year in consultation with the faculty member. Divide total project direct cost by the duration of grant/contract (i.e., number of years). Enter a whole number without $ sign and without punctuation.

Grants and Contracts – Examples

Three examples are provided, demonstrating reporting by faculty who serve as principal investigator and faculty who serve as project leader on a larger project. Data for these fields are shown in the table that follows.

    • Example 1: Role in Grant = Principal Investigator, Grant Type = R01

Generally the Principal Investigator (PI) is responsible for the entire project. The PI should report the total direct costs and one year direct cost for the current award period.

CV Report for Example 1:

Principal Investigator, 25%, Antitubulin Drugs: Mechanisms of Action and Resistance, NIH 7 R01 CA100202-04, 04/15/2003–04/14/2008, $500,000 ($100,000/year)

    • Example 2: Role in Grant = Project Leader, Grant Type = P01 or SPORE

For projects where a faculty member other than the PI is the project leader, the project leader should report the direct cost amount for the project. Note: for large grants, such as P01s or SPOREs, include only the amount for the portion of the grant for which the faculty member is responsible.

CV Report for  Example 2:

Project Leader, 20%, Targeting Microtubules and HDAC6 in NSCLC: Project 3 - Targeting Cell Signaling in Lung Cancer, PI: John Doe, NIH 1PO1 CA 116676-01A1 4/1/2006-3/31/2008, $250,000 ($125,000/year)

    • Example 3: Role in Grant = Shared Resource Director, Grant Type = CCSG (P30)

The faculty member should report the direct cost amount for which he/she is responsible. In the case of program leaders and co-leaders, this is the CCSG Program direct cost budget. In the case of Shared Resource directors and co-directors, this is the Shared Resource direct cost budget.

CV Report for Example 3:

Shared Resource Director, 10%, Cancer Center Support (Core) Grant: DNA Sequencing Shared Resource, PI: John Mendelsohn, NIH/NCI 5 P30 CA016672-28, 7/1/2003 -6/30/2008, $625,000 ($125,000/year)
