Configuring a Mac to work with the FIS

Q and A

Q: User cannot consistently enter text into Unique Activities or Publications/Other and when unsuccessful, cannot return to try again.

A: Unique Activities and Publications/Other are Rich Text entry boxes with WYSIWYG options to format text. These features will only work reliably with Firefox 2 (not Firefox 1 or any version of Safari). Firefox is available as a free download at "http://www.mozilla.com". (see "Configuring Your Mac" for download instructions).

Q: What is the purpose of downloading the footer.htm file?

A: This is a one-time action that must be performed on each Mac running the FIS software. The file consists of the M. D. Anderson logo and footer information that will be displayed on the CV (see "Configuring Your Mac" for download instructions).

Q: Why does opening a CV in Word sometimes lock up the computer?

A: When the CV is opened by Word the footer.htm file is loaded into the document to provide the M. D. Anderson logo and page footer information. If the footer.htm file is not present by having either been deleted or moved, then Word will lock up and require a Force Quit (see "Error Messages" for instructions for unlocking the computer).

Q: User deleted the footer.htm file and wants to download it again.

A: When the footer.htm file is downloaded, a cookie is stored on the computer. To download the footer.htm file again, the user must clear the cookie cache in Firefox (see "Configuring Your Mac" for instructions for clearing a cookie cache).

Q: When attempting to open a CV in Word, the following error message is displayed: Word encountered file corruption while opening Report.doc.

A: This issue is currently being researched; the current fix is to click "No" in response to the Attempt recovery now? This error message typically appears only on the first attempt to open the downloaded file; however, it can also be caused by a missing footer.htm file.  The user should verify that the footer.htm file is still located on the desktop and if not, download the file (see "Configuring Your Mac" for instructions for downloading the footer.htm file).

Q: Opening an HTML CV in a popup window doesn’t work. I got a message saying Firefox prevented this site from opening a popup window.

A: The HTML CV in a popup window will not work if popup blocking is enabled. To unblock the pop up, click Preferences and Allow popups for fis.mdanderson.org (see "Configuring Your Mac" for instructions for unblocking the popup blocker).

Q: When attempting to open the CV in Word, the following message is displayed: Some of the files in this Web page aren’t in the expected location.

A: The message is a warning, not an error message and is intended to alert the user of a possible security problem. Since the files are internal to M. D. Anderson, there is no security concern and the user should click ’Yes.’
